Entering service in 1989, the Dash 8-40CW was the first in General Electrics line of road diesels to feature the North American Safety Cab (otherwise known as the wide-cab design). It would set the standard for the basic appearance of all GE locomotives for the next two decades, becoming an icon of North American freight railroading.
