History & Legacy

This locomotive is widely regarded as one of the most iconic streamlined steam locomotives ever built.

In the summer of 1934, J-1e Hudson No. 5344 was removed from service and sent to West Albany to be fitted with the first sheet-metal locomotive shroud in the United States. Painted in gunmetal gray with striking aluminum trim, the locomotive was christened Commodore Vanderbilt in honor of the famed American businessman who once owned the New York Central Railroad.

Developed by engineers at the Case School of Applied Science, the streamlined shroud completely covered both the locomotive and tender. The design was not purely aestheticit was carefully engineered and highly functional. Hinged panels allowed access to key maintenance points, while a grilled rece
